The Central government has increased the strength of the joint parliamentary committee assigned to scrutinise the proposed “one nation, one election” (ONOE) bills. The committee will now consist of 39 members, up from the earlier 31, with representation expanded to include more political parties.
The revamped list of Lok Sabha members includes representatives from the Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI(M), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), along with additional members from the BJP and the Samajwadi Party.
The new members proposed for the Lok Sabha include Baijayant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal from the BJP, Chhotelal from the SP, Anil Desai from the Shiv Sena (UBT), Shambhavi from the LJP, and K Radhakrishnan from the CPI(M).
The committee, which will comprise 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha, is tasked with examining the two bills. One of the bills seeks to amend the Constitution to enable simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
