Senior IAS officer TV Somanathan has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary, succeeding Rajiv Gauba. A 1987-batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, Somanathan is currently serving as the Union Finance Secretary and Secretary of Expenditure.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri T V Somanathan, IAS, as Cabinet Secretary with a tenure of two years from 30.08.2024,” an official order said.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also approved the appointment of Shri T V Somanathan, IAS as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat from the date he joins the assignment till he takes over as Cabinet Secretary,” it added.
Gauba assumed the role of Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2019, and has held the position for the past five years.
Who is TV Somanathan?
T.V. Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer from Tamil Nadu, holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Calcutta University. He has served in various roles, including Finance Expenditure Secretary from 2019 to 2021, succeeding Girish Chandra Murmu.
Somanathan’s career includes positions as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and Director of Corporate Affairs at the World Bank. In Tamil Nadu, he was Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. and Joint Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office.
