The CBI on Thursday arrested Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar from his Mohali office and recovered Rs 5 crore in cash, luxury cars, among other things from him. The investigation was based on a complaint filed by a scrap dealer against Bhullar for demanding Rs 8 lakh as a bribe. The scrap dealer identified as Akash Batta is a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh, in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab.
Notably, a middleman identified as Kirshanu was also arrested, and the CBI officials recovered Rs 21 lakh from him. According to the officials, both the accused will be produced before a court on Friday.

According to Indian Express report, a written complaint was addressed to the Superintendent of Police, CBI, Anti-Corruption Branch, Chandigarh, on October 11. In the complaint, Batta alleged that Bhullar had demanded a bribe for settling a 2023 case of cheating and forgery against him, as the scrap dealer was accused of faking bills.
Who is Harcharan Singh Bhullar?
Harcharan Singh Bhullar is an Indian Police Service Officer (IPS) from the 2007 batch. In November 2004, he assumed the charge as the DIG of the Ropar range in Punjab. Before this posting, he was the DIG of the Patiala range. Notably, his father, Mahal Singh Bhullar, was the former DGP of Punjab. Along with this, his brother Kuldeep Singh Bhullar is also a former Congress MLA.
While serving with the police, Bhullar played a significant role in the anti-drug campaign by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. During the campaign, he headed the Special Investigation Team that interrogated the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia on drug smuggling charges.
What all did CBI recover from Bhullar?
During the investigation, CBI recovered around Rs 5 crore in cash from premises linked to the arrested Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar. In addition, CBI officials also seized about 1.5 kg of jewellery, property documents, and other assets in Punjab, including keys to two luxury vehicles (Mercedes and Audi), 22 luxury watches, locker keys, 40 litres of imported liquor, and firearms, comprising one double-barrel gun, one pistol, one revolver, and one airgun, along with ammunition.
