Citizenship Amendment Act: FAQs

The official web portal of the home ministry has listed answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) regarding the application process for obtaining citizenship under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act 1955.

Regarding the query about the effective date of citizenship under the CAA, the MHA portal states, “Individuals granted citizenship via registrar neutralization under Section 6B of the Citizenship Act 1955 will be considered citizens of India from the date of their entry into the country.”

In response to inquiries about this FAQ, an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that citizenship under the CAA will indeed be granted retrospectively in accordance with the law.

“The date of the applicant’s entry into India will serve as the date for the grant of Indian citizenship under the CAA. This could range from 10 years ago to 25 years ago,” stated the official.
