Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday joined his INDIA bloc partners to take on the Centre over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Kejriwal termed the government’s decision as “very dangerous” and claimed that law and order would collapse, subsequently leading to a rise in thefts, robberies, and rape.

“It is written in the CAA that minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will be given citizenship. This is a poor country; if we open our doors, where will we settle them? There is going to be more migration due to the CAA law than what happened after independence. Law and order will collapse; theft, robbery, and rape will increase,” Kejriwal said.

He also highlighted that over the past 75 years, Delhi witnessed the construction of 63 flyovers, whereas the Aam Aadmi Party government managed to build 31 flyovers in just 10 years.

“There was a lack of intention to do the work, not a lack of money. 7,500 fewer roads have been built in the last nine years. The number of water pipelines laid in the last nine years has never been done before. When our government came, there were 4,500 buses in Delhi; today, it has become 8,000. We are working for everyone. Today we improved the condition of hospitals. There is a ‘Mohalla’ Clinic in every locality. Now there is no need to go to private hospitals,” the chief minister said.

The Delhi Chief Minister also questioned the BJP’s intentions and wondered how the Centre would accommodate the 1.5 crore people who will migrate and provide them with jobs.

‘Stop spreading lies’: BJP reacts to Kejirwal’s remarks

In response to Kejriwal’s statements, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad lashed out at Kejriwal, urging him to “stop spreading lies”.

“It does not at all deprive any Indians of their citizenship. CAA only gives citizenship to those who are persecuted based on their faith. I want to tell those trying to spread communal tension in the name of CAA to stop. Stop telling lies. I urge the parties of South India, particularly from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, to stop spreading hatred,” he said.

He further argued that individuals in the specified countries faced persecution due to their Hindu, Jain, Sikh faith, and India, as a nation, has a moral, constitutional, and cultural responsibility to offer them citizenship protection through legal channels.

“Kejriwal ji, how far will you go in anticipation of the vote bank? Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly made it clear that the citizenship of any Indian citizen will not be taken away.”

He further added that CAA only grants citizenship to individuals persecuted based on their faith. Those spreading falsehoods are the ones advocating for the Rohingya.

On March 11, the Union Home Ministry notified the rules about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), shortly before announcing the Lok Sabha election schedule. The CAA rules, enacted by the Narendra Modi government and approved by Parliament in 2019, aim to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.
