A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader was shot dead by armed assailants in Haryana’s Naraingarh, police said, reports PTI.

The victim, Harbilas Singh Rajjumajra, was travelling with two companions, Puneet and Gugal, in their car on Friday evening when the attack took place. Puneet sustained gunshot wounds but is reported to be out of danger.

Rajjumajra was rushed to PGIMER in Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries late at night.

Rajjumajra had contested the Naraingarh assembly seat in the previous year’s elections but was unsuccessful.

Naraingarh SHO Lalit Kumar arrived at the crime scene to initiate the investigation. Ambala’s Superintendent of Police, S.S. Bhoria, said that a dedicated police team has been formed to apprehend the assailants.

BSP leaders from Ambala have called for swift action, urging police to make every effort to arrest those responsible.

Probe in the case is underway and search is on to identify the assailants.

Akash Anand, the national coordinator of the BSP and nephew of Mayawati, expressed his shock over the murder of Haryana BSP unit state secretary Harbilas Rajjumajra.

“I have lost a young friend. He was a dedicated worker of the Bahujan Samaj Party and had contested the election from the Naraingarh assembly seat. The murder of such a young public leader is deeply saddening and reflects the prevailing anarchy in the state,” Anand said.

He further criticised the state of law and order under the BJP government, and said, “Law and order have deteriorated under the BJP’s rule, whether in Maharashtra, Haryana, or Uttar Pradesh. Officers are safe under government protection, while the public remains vulnerable.”

He also extended his condolences, saying, “May nature give strength to his family to bear this immense sorrow.”
