The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday demolished a nearly 40-year-old Kali Mata temple in the P/North ward to expedite the ongoing work on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project.

While the temple was situated outside the project’s alignment, its removal was deemed necessary to ease traffic and support construction activities.

According to officials, the temple, located between Dindoshi bus stop and Ratnagiri junction, posed a logistical challenge due to its position on a curve, obstructing crucial works like segment launches and traffic diversions. The BMC, after compensating the temple authorities, carried out the demolition without resistance.

“It was a nearly 40-50 year old Kali Mata temple. After checking all documents, the temple was found eligible and we have provided them with monetary compensation. Now, the temple is being relocated to an alternate location. The entire drive on Friday was carried out very peacefully,” a senior official told The Indian Express.

The GMLR is a 12.2-kilometer project that will link the western suburb of Goregaon to the eastern suburb of Mulund.

The project involves the construction of arterial roads, bridges, and underground tunnels and spans four civic wards, two in the western suburbs and two in the eastern suburbs (T and S wards).
