A recent editorial in Suprabhatham, the mouthpiece of Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, has launched a strong critique of, Wayanad MP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s absence from the Lok Sabha during the crucial Waqf Bill voting session.

The editorial lambasts Priyanka Gandhi’s decision to skip the parliamentary session, particularly when a whip was in place, calling it a “black mark” on her political record. The editorial read, “by violating the whip and not attending the assembly, Priyanka has tainted herself.”

The editorial also suggested that Priyanka’s absence indicates a lack of seriousness and responsibility towards her duties as a parliamentarian. It even questioned her commitment to the issues being debated in the House and implied that she prioritizes other matters over her parliamentary obligations.

The editorial was not limited to Priyanka Gandhi’s absence. It was a broader commentary on the current state of Indian politics, with the headline “The Era of Inaction” suggesting a general dissatisfaction with the performance of political leaders.

Earlier BJP MP Dinesh Sharma questioned absence of Gandhi family during the debate. “The parliament witnessed such a historic moment…Neither Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra nor Sonia Gandhi spoke during the discussions. It was not known whether they were in favour or against it…Everyone knew that the bill was in the best interests of the minorities and leaders across party lines have voted in favour of the bill,” Sharma said.

Samastha’s criticism carries weight in Kerala, given its significant influence among the state’s Muslim population and holds considerable influence within Kerala’s Muslim community, a key voting bloc.

The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. It was passed in the Lok Sabha early Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.
