As tensions flared in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh called a meeting of all the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ally MLAs at the CM’s secretariat in Imphal at 6 pm on Monday.

The meeting has been called to review the “developing law and order situation in the state”, officials said, PTI reported.

The meeting comes as the government of Manipur, Secretariat Higher and Technical Education Department, declared the closure of schools, and colleges, including state universities, in Imphal West and Imphal East districts till Tuesday, November 19, amid curfew.

Manipur is witnessing an uptick in violence in the state capital – after six members of a Meitei family were abducted from a relief camp in Jiribam last week and five were eventually found dead.

Since then, mobs have targeted and vandalised the homes of several political leaders, largely associated with the BJP.

The development also comes as Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP), which has seven MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, withdrew support from the BJP-led government, claiming that the N Biren Singh dispensation has “completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy” in the northeastern state.

Conrad Sangma’s letter, addressed to BJP chief JP Nadda, mentioned the Manipur CM by name. “We strongly feel that the Manipur state government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh led Government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect,” he wrote, Indian Express reported.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah will also hold a meeting to issue directions on how to try and control the violence in the state.
