Following Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh’s example, the Bihar government has sought reports from District Magistrates on illegal slaughterhouses. Yogi Adityanath kept his promise of the Sankalp Patra and launched a severe crackdown on at least 3 major regions of Uttar Pradesh, namely Ghaziabad, Varanasi and Allahabad on Tuesday. These regions saw a mass closure of illegal slaughterhouses on Tuesday. Certain reports suggest that about 15 slaughterhouses had been sealed by the government officials in Ghaziabad. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, Varanasi found itself seeing the shutdown of these slaughterhouses.

Reports also stated there were many slaughterhouses which had been shut down on record since 2012 but they had continued their operations on a daily basis away from the eyes of the authorities. In many regions, teams consisting of the Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation authorities, with police officials sealed these slaughterhouses and even recovered frozen cattle.

Officials were reported saying that many of these slaughterhouses had been sealed after the failure of their caretakers to present valid papers in time. The owners were, however, quoted saying that the cattle had been brought there temporarily for transfer to other places. They had even denied that any animals were being slaughtered in the regions. Closing down all illegal slaughterhouses in the state was one of the BJP’s biggest pre-election promise. BJP President Amit Shah, in an interview, had even said that when the government came to power, it would shut down all slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh.

Although the crackdown ion Uttar Pradesh has come under severe criticism as it resulted in the unemployment of many workers who were a part of the meat producing industry in the state. The shortage of meat in the state also meant that decade and century-old food joints had to go down for the day. Even the animals in Lucknow zoo had suffered from the shortage of meat in the state.
