NDA sweeps Bihar polls

The parties of the Mahagatbandhan, including the RJD and Congress, suffered huge setbacks. Jan Suraaj, which had hoped for an impressive debut after its founder, Prashant Kishor, conducted an extensive campaign, failed to open its account.

The ruling NDA secured 202 seats, a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. This is the second time the NDA has crossed the 200-mark in the assembly polls. Earlier in 2010 polls, they had won 206 seats.

In the NDA, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 89 seats, Janata Dal (United) has bagged 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) secured 19, Hindustan Awam Morcha (Secular) HAMS won five and Rashtriya Lok Morcha have won four seats.

As for the elections, it was indeed one of the most competitive battles the ruling and opposition sides ever fought. Interestingly, unemployment, education, development, farmers, women and backward communities remained the top issues for all – making it neck and neck.

Big names in the battle

The main contest was between the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan. NDA includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha.

The Mahagathbandhan led by Rashtriya Janata Dal includes the Congress party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (CPI-ML) led by Deepankar Bhattacharya, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and Mukesh Sahani‘s Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP).

Also, all eyes were on the big horses who carried the burden of their parties’ prestige on their shoulders. This includes Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary (BJP) and Vijay Sinha (BJP), Maithili Thakur (BJP), Anant Singh (JDU) and Khesari Lal Yadav (RJD) among others.
