Bihar Elections 2025: Folk singer Maithili Thakur is emerging as one of the fresh names in the upcoming Bihar Election 2025. Thakur has already met BJP election in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai, leading to buzzing rumours of her contesting the Bihar elections, likely from Alinagar seat in Darbhanga region.
Tawde shared the pictures of his meeting with Thakur on his X handle on Sunday where he said that the singer and her family had left Bihar in 1995 during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure. He added that the same “daughter” now wants to return after seeing the progress the state has made.
“Today, Union Minister of State for Home @nityanandraibjp ji and I urged her that for the people of Bihar and for the development of Bihar, her contribution is expected by the common man of Bihar and that she fulfil their expectations. Best wishes to Bihar’s daughter Maithili Thakur ji!,” Tawde said in the post.
Who is Maithili Thakur?
Maithili Thakur has been named the ‘State Icon’ of Bihar by the Election Commission, highlighting her popularity and influence. The recognition also reflects her role as a cultural ambassador for the state.
Trained in Indian classical and folk music, Thakur received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2021 from the Sangeet Natak Akademi for her contributions to Bihar’s folk music.
Born in Madhubani district, Bihar, Maithili and her two brothers learned folk and Hindustani classical music, along with harmonium and tabla, from their grandfather and father. She is known for performing traditional folk songs of Bihar in Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Hindi.
What Maithili said about contesting in upcoming Bihar Elections
Responding to the buzz about contesting the elections on a BJP ticket, Maithili Thakur clarified that her recent visit to Bihar involved meetings with Nityanand Rai and Vinod Tawde to discuss the state’s future, but no official decision has been made about her candidature.
She indicated that if given a poll ticket, she would like to contest from her home constituency, as she feels a special connection to that area.
On her political support in the Bihar elections, she said, “”I don’t want to comment on this right now… I am standing strong to contribute whatever possible towards the country’s development.”
