A 26-year-old techie, Priyanka Kumari Poonia, died on the spot after falling under a lorry. The bike she was riding as a pillion skidded near APMC on Madanayakanahalli–Huskur Road in Bengaluru Rural district on Saturday around 9:30 am.
How did the incident occur?
Priyanka was travelling with her brother Naresh Kumar Poonia, who was riding the bike. The road reportedly had damages due to ongoing construction. While trying to avoid a pothole, her brother lost control, causing both to fall.
“As usual, I used to drop my sister at Madavara Metro Station every day. I don’t know what went wrong yesterday. A car in front of us stopped because of a pothole on the road. I had to brake my motorcycle, and I couldn’t figure out what to do. My sister, Priyanka, died on the spot,” Naresh told NDTV.
Police said her brother, who was wearing a helmet, suffered minor injuries, but Priyanka, who was not wearing a helmet, came under the truck and died on the spot, as per India Today.
Body sent for post-mortem
Madanayakanahalli Police visited the accident site and registered a case. Priyanka’s body has been taken to Nelamangala Government Hospital for post-mortem.
“Priyanka’s brother was riding the bike while she was the pillion rider. He was wearing a helmet. Soon after they left home and were heading to their destination, he tried to avoid a bad patch of road. Both of them fell off the bike – the rider escaped as he had a helmet on, but Priyanka, who wasn’t wearing one, was run over by a lorry and died on the spot,” India Today reported citing police officials.
Adding to it, the police added, “We haven’t yet recorded a statement from her brother to ascertain the exact reason for the accident. They are not in a position to speak to us right now. We will investigate further and record his statement, after which the cause of the mishap will be clear”.
Naresh told NDTV that the road where the accident occurred has been in bad condition for over seven months.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw recently drew attention to Bengaluru’s garbage and pothole problems after a visitor from China expressed disappointment over the city’s condition.
“Very, very pathetic, which shows citizens’ lack of civic sense and huge apathy by both citizens and administration. We lack pride,” the Biocon founder said.
