Baryl Vanneihsangi won the recently held Mizoram assembly election from the Aizawl South-III constituency, becoming the youngest woman MLA in the state. A member of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Baryl secured victory with a total of 9,370 votes, defeating Mizo National Front’s (MNF) candidate F Lalnunmawia.

The 32-year-old won from Aizawl South-III constituency by 1,414 votes. The ZPM, Mizoram’s newest party, won the election by taking 27 of 40 seats, decimating the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF).

This is the first time the northeastern state has elected more than one woman MLAs and Baryl is one of the three women elected in Mizoram Assembly elections 2023.

Who is Baryl Vanneihsangi?

  • Baryl Vanneihsangi is the youngest MLA in the Mizoram assembly. She is 32 years old.
  • According to the affidavit in the Election Commission, Baryl has previously served as a corporator in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).
  • Baryl Vanneihsangi is reportedly a former radio jockey (RJ). She is popular on Instagram with over 254k followers.
  • ZPM’s Vanneihsangi is also a former TV presenter, who completed her master of arts from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong. She had earlier been a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
  • Soon after the Mizoram results, Baryl spoke emphatically about gender equality and urged women to follow their passion.

“I just want to tell all the women out there that our gender doesn’t stop us from doing anything that we like and wish to pursue. It doesn’t prevent us from taking up something that we are passionate about. My message to them is that regardless of which community or social strata they belong to, if they want to take up something they should just go for it,” she told news agency ANI.
