In a significant development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has appointed former Chief Minister Atishi Marlena Singh as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. The decision was made during a meeting of AAP’s legislative party members on Sunday, just ahead of the Assembly session commencing in February 2024.
Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, previously served as the Chief Minister of Delhi from September 2024 to February 2025.
Confirming the decision, AAP leader Gopal Rai told ANI, “In today’s legislative party meeting, it was unanimously decided that Atishi will serve as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. During challenging times, she has worked tirelessly for the people of Delhi as Chief Minister. AAP will fulfill its role as a responsible opposition.”
Atishi promises to ensures BJP fulfill its promise
Atishi thanked AAP chief Kejriwal and the elected party MLAs for giving her the responsibility. While addressing a press conference she ensured that AAP would fulfil its promise, specially made to the women voters. She pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised a scheme to give Rs 2500 to women and has pledged that it will be executed in the first cabinet meeting.
However, she noted that, ‘’The first cabinet meeting has taken place but the scheme was not implemented. AAP’s responsibility is to hold BJP liable, and we vow to Delhi’s women that we will make sure that they get Rs 2,500,’’ as quoted by ANI.
AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal, along with 22 party MLAs, including Atishi, was present when the final decision was made.
During the three-day session of the Delhi Assembly, the ruling BJP government is set to table the pending Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports and review the performance of the previous AAP government.
Atishi’s appointment has been made in the aftermath of AAP’s major electoral loss, as BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in the February 5 Assembly elections. AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and many leaders of the party including senior leader Manish Sisodia faced defeat.
