Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Jammu on Saturday to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir amid escalating terror activities in the typically peaceful Jammu region. This marks his second visit to Jammu in less than three weeks since assuming the role of the 30th Chief of the Indian Army on June 30, reported PTI.

The visit comes in the wake of two recent terror attacks that claimed the lives of nine army personnel, including a captain. The attacks occurred in the remote forest areas of Machedi in Kathua and Desa forest in Doda on July 8 and July 15, respectively.

Gen Dwivedi is set to chair a high-level security review meeting at the police headquarters in Jammu. The meeting will be attended by top officers from the police, army, paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies. Senior officials from the Defence and Home Ministries are also expected to participate.

The Army, in a statement on July 16, reaffirmed the commitment of all formations under the Udhampur-based Northern Command to eradicate terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The statement highlighted ongoing joint and coordinated operations with the J-K Police aimed at eliminating foreign terrorists who have infiltrated from across the border. These terrorists are reportedly moving through the upper reaches of Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar districts in Jammu, before making their way to Kashmir.

Earlier, on July 3, Gen Dwivedi visited the border district of Poonch and chaired a security review meeting in Jammu, demonstrating his proactive approach to addressing security concerns in the region.

The recent surge in terror activities underscores the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army Chief’s visit is expected to reinforce the efforts to counter these threats and ensure the safety and security of the region’s inhabitants.
