In a major development in the Archita Phukan cyber defamation case, Dibrugarh Police have arrested the prime accused responsible for creating and circulating explicit morphed images of the young woman online. The accused, identified as Archita’s former boyfriend, Pratim Bora, allegedly used photo manipulation tools to superimpose her face onto pornographic images and spread them across social media.
The doctored visuals falsely portrayed Archita as being involved in adult content and claimed she was living in the United States—allegations that have been officially debunked by the police. “She is not linked to any such content nor residing abroad,” confirmed a senior police official. “This was a deliberate attempt to malign her image following a personal fallout.”
After coming across the content online, Archita lodged a formal FIR at the Dibrugarh Police Station. The cybercrime unit launched an immediate investigation and tracked the digital evidence back to Bora. He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, including cyber harassment, defamation, and violation of privacy.
“The case exposes the dark underbelly of digital harassment and revenge porn,” the police said, adding that Bora is currently in custody and will be produced before the court soon.
Authorities have also issued a stern warning to the public not to share or forward such misleading and offensive content. Archita, who has maintained her dignity throughout the ordeal, thanked the police for their swift action and urged the public to respect her privacy.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Assam, with many calling for stricter action against cyber harassment and stronger digital safety laws to protect individuals—especially women—against such crimes.
