On Tuesday afternoon, Delhi-NCR was jolted by strong tremors of earthquake of which the epicenter was Nepal. According to reports, two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 4.6 and 6.2 hit Delhi-NCR.

India has witnessed some strong earthquakes in the past and below are 5 major ones that caused severe destruction in various parts of the country:

BIHAR

An earthquake of magnitude: 8.1 hit Bihar on January 15, 1934. This particular earthquake is considered to be one of the worst quakes in Indian history. The epicenter of this quake was located in eastern Nepal and caused extensive damage to life and property. The tremors of this earthquake was felt 650 kms away from the epicenter in Kolkata. Among the worst affected areas were Purnea, Munger, Muzaffarpur and Champaran.

GUJARAT

Gujarat was hit by the worst ever earthquake on January 26, 2001 of magnitude 7.7. It lasted for two minutes when it occurred at 8:40 am. A large-scale devastation occurred in several towns and villages. Bhuj was among the worst-affected areas as it was close to the epicenter. Other affected areas included Anjaar, Vondh and Bhachau. Swaminarayan temple situated in the city of Bhuj was also partially damaged. Several other buildings were also damaged or destroyed in this earthquake.

MARASHTRA

Maharashtra’s Latur became the epicenter of a destructive earthquake on September 30, 1993. Killari village in Latur district along with Osmanabad were the worst affected ones in this earthquake. Over 52 villages were flattened in the destruction. The toll rose above 20,000 after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake caused destruction in Maharashtra.

ASSAM

The epicenter of the 8.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Assam on August 15, 1950 was Rima in Tibet. The earthquake damaged life and property in both Assam and Tibet. This earthquake was listed under the largest earthquakes of the 20th century. The death toll was ove 1,500 in the destruction.

UTTARKASHI

Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Tehri in Uttrakhand were shaken by a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on October 20, 1991. The tremors were felt up to Delhi. This quake caused extensive damage to life and property, raising tolls to over 1000.
