Startups registered under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Commerce Ministry have created over 16.6 lakh direct jobs across more than 55 industries as of October 31, 2024, Piyush Goyal said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. Currently, 1.5 lakh startups are registered under DPIIT’s Startup India programme. 

Startups in IT services created the highest number of direct jobs, 2.04 lakh, followed by 1.47 lakh direct jobs created by startups in healthcare and life sciences, 94,060 by startups in professional and commercial services, 90,414 by education startups, 88,702 by startups in the construction sector, 88,468 by food and beverage startups, 87,983 by human resource startups, etc. 

The Commerce Ministry in its 2023 annual review in December last year had noted that an average of 11 jobs were created by each recognised startup under the Startup India programme. 

However, according to data from the executive search firm Longhouse Consulting, Indian startups had cut less jobs in the first half of 2024 in comparison to the year-ago period and the previous six months. Startups had cut nearly 11,250 jobs during January to June 2024 period vis-a-vis 21,000 jobs cut in the first half of 2023 and 15,000 jobs in the second half of 2023.

Among the recent initiatives by the government, a new digital platform Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) under the Startup India programme was launched to bring key stakeholders of the startup ecosystem under one roof.  

As a centralized repository for startups looking to connect with investors, mentors, service providers, and government bodies to connect, exchange ideas and grow, BHASKAR aims to enable a seamless network and community of the Indian startup ecosystem.
