The section of Ring Road which runs from Civil Lines-Metcalf Road to Kashmere Gate ISBT will be undergoing a revamp, The Indian Express reported citing officials. Additionally, the beautification of the sidewalks on both sides of the road will be done. The stretch in question measures 4.5 kilometres in length and links North Delhi with Central Delhi starting from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Nigambodh Ghat, near Kashmere Gate ISBT.
Why is the stretch undergoing a revamp?
The senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials have said that the stretch is due for repair and strengthening. An official highlighted the importance of it saying that it not only connects North Delhi with Central Delhi, it also links “VIP routes such as CM house, L-G house, Delhi University North Campus, ISBT, Hanuman Temple besides ITO, Pragati Maidan, Sarai Kale Khan, and Mathura Road”.
The road has been marred by several issues, including potholes and cracks, another official said. Besides this, its bituminous layers are coming off, adding to the already heavily packed stretch.”We have conducted a thorough assessment of this stretch with the assistance of experts, following which it has been decided to repair it…Once the road is strengthened, it will be helpful in reducing traffic jams and giving a safe and smooth ride to commuters,” the official added.
The revamp plan received financial approval from the PWD minister in March. However, the project failed to commence as the Model Code of Conduct was implemented ahead of Lok Sabha polls.
Tenders for the project have been floated and the bidding process has commenced, an official said. “The bidding process and work of award will take about one month…Once the work is awarded, the repair work will begin by September,” they added.
As part of the repair and strengthening work, new bituminous layers will be relaid on the main carriageways of the stretch. Additionally, all potholes, cracks, and breaks along with central verges and sideways will be repaired. The officials stated that the contractor awarded the work will also be responsible for maintaining the stretch—bituminous work for five years and thermoplastic paint for two years. Moreover, the defect liability period for the work will be 12 months.
