Mumbai’s first cable-stayed bridge after the Bandra Worli Sea Link, the new Reay Road bridge, will become operational in November, The Indian Express reported.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), is reconstructing the century-old Reay Road bridge to ensure smoother traffic flow.

Project cost

The project is estimated to cost Rs 175 crore, with 90 per cent of the construction work already completed. The bridge is expected to be opened for vehicular traffic by November.

Built in 1911 using black basalt stones, the old Reay Road bridge began to deteriorate over time as traffic volume increased. This led authorities to propose its reconstruction. The original structure was demolished in 2022, and construction of the new bridge commenced shortly after.

The new Reay Road bridge is designed to be a state-of-the-art structure featuring four vehicular lanes, modeled after the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Spanning 220 meters, the bridge will include a dedicated footpath for pedestrians and will boast an aesthetic design with selfie points at both ends.

The bridge will be constructed near Reay Road station, spanning above the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow on the highway.
