The government is planning to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative technologies to monitor traffic violations and ensure accurate penalty enforcement, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday (October 24).
Speaking at the 12th edition of the Traffic InfraTech Expo, Gadkari outlined initiatives to upgrade toll collection systems, including exploring satellite-based toll systems to enhance efficiency and transparency.
Expert committee formed to review innovate proposals
He emphasised that road safety can only be achieved by integrating advanced engineering solutions, enforcing laws effectively, and adopting modern technologies like AI. To improve road safety, the government has decided to engage private sector experts to collaborate on technological innovations.
“A dedicated expert committee will evaluate proposals from startups and industry leaders, ensuring that the best ideas are implemented,” Gadkari said. The committee is expected to finalise its evaluations within three months, aiming for swift improvements in the sector.
Gadkari also reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in the use of surveillance technology, such as cameras. He assured that quality would not be compromised, regardless of whether solutions are provided by large or small firms.
Additionally, the minister encouraged small businesses with innovative technologies to participate in government tenders, stressing the need for cost-effective solutions that maintain profitability without exploitation. He noted that adopting the best technologies would help India achieve transparency, reduce costs, and significantly improve road safety.
Addressing country’s urgent road safety issues
Gadkari urged all stakeholders—government, private sector, and startups—to collaborate in addressing the country’s urgent road safety issues. He highlighted the alarming statistics of road accidents in India, with nearly 5 lakh accidents occurring annually, resulting in numerous fatalities. He pointed out that over half of the casualties involve individuals aged 18-36 years.
The economic impact of road accidents is estimated to be 3% of India’s GDP, Gadkari said, stressing that improving road safety is a top government priority, and measures are already being taken to tackle the issue.
