Travelers will soon be able to journey from Delhi to Dehradun in just 2.5 hours via the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which is expected to be completed by next year. Currently, the trip from Delhi to Dehradun takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours.
“Once the expressway is finished, the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced to 2.5 hours, and the journey from Delhi to Haridwar will be cut from 5 hours to 2 hours,” Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways has said in a post on X.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway likely to open in Dec
According to a report in The Times of India, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) aims to open the New Delhi-Dehradun Expressway by December. The report further added that the segment connecting the expressway to Haridwar is projected to be completed by May 2025.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway features
- Once completed, the travel time from Akshardham in Delhi to Dehradun will be reduced to just two and a half hours, down from the current six hours. Similarly, the journey from Delhi to Haridwar will take just two hours.
- The 264-kilometer expressway and its link to Haridwar, with a total investment of approximately Rs 14,285 crore, are fully funded by the government.
- The project features notable elements such as Asia’s longest elevated wildlife corridor, spanning 12 kilometers, and an animal underpass, designed to reduce human-wildlife conflicts in the Rajaji National Park and Shiwalik Reserve forest areas.
- The first leg of the expressway, extending from Akshardham to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) interchange, traverses areas including Geeta Colony, Shastri Park, and Sonia Vihar in Delhi, as well as Vijay Vihar, Kasim Vihar, and Mandola in Uttar Pradesh. The opening of this stretch is expected to alleviate daily traffic congestion for many commuters.
- The 32-kilometer access-controlled section of the Delhi-EPE route features a notable 19 kilometers of elevated roadway, designed to handle through traffic, while a six-lane service road beneath will manage local traffic.
- The Delhi-Dehradun expressway will have seven entry points for vehicles traveling from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh, located at Akshardham, Geeta Colony, Shamshan Ghat (Kailash Nagar), Sonia Vihar, Vijay Vihar, and Mandola. Exits will be available at Khajuri Chowk, Sonia Vihar, Vijay Vihar, and Mandola.
- For traffic traveling from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi, entry points will be at Mandola, Vijay Vihar, and 5th Pusta. Exits will be provided at Mandola, Loni, Vijay Vihar, Usmanpur, Shamshan Ghat (Kailash Nagar), Geeta Colony, and Akshardham.
