Villupuram district continues to suffer from severe flooding as the region grapples with the aftermath of Cyclonic Storm Fengal, which weakened into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area on December 2. The relentless rains have submerged vast areas of Villupuram town, surrounding villages, and nearby towns, causing widespread disruption.
Suspension of Railway Services Due to Flooding
As floodwaters surged above danger levels, especially near an arterial bridge between Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam, Southern Railway was forced to suspend operations on the crucial railway stretch. This decision resulted in the cancellation, diversion, and short termination of several express and superfast trains.
Villupuram, a vital junction connecting Chennai to other northern parts of Tamil Nadu and the central and southern regions, has witnessed significant disruptions. Train services between Chennai and the southern parts of the state, including key towns like Cuddalore and Krishnagiri, have been severely affected. The flooding in these areas, including the spate of the River Thenpennai, has made travel difficult.
The flooding in nearby Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts has also created havoc, with many vehicles washed off roads into low-lying areas. The flooding in Krishnagiri is being described as the worst in the past two to three decades, leading to the closure of important roadways, including the route from Uthangarai to towns like Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai.
