The Railway Protection Force (RPF) in the Eastern Railway (ER) zone took action against over 1,400 male passengers in October for unlawfully travelling in compartments designated exclusively for women. The arrests were made as part of an effort to ensure safe and secure travel for women on trains across the ER zone, an official confirmed on Saturday.

In a public statement, the RPF urged male passengers to avoid travelling in women-only compartments or on ladies’ special trains, as these are designated spaces intended to enhance the safety and comfort of female passengers. Women experiencing any inconvenience or harassment on board can dial the railway helpline number, 139, to seek immediate assistance from railway authorities.

Sealdah Division Leads with 574 Arrests

The arrests were part of a comprehensive operation across four major divisions within the Eastern Railway zone. Sealdah division saw the highest number of cases, with 574 male passengers apprehended, followed by 392 arrests in Asansol, 262 in Howrah, and 176 in Malda, according to the official report.

The RPF registered over 1,200 cases in total, reinforcing its commitment to protecting the rights of women passengers. Penal measures, including fines and imprisonment, are being imposed on offenders found in violation of these regulations.

“The enforcement action serves as a strong message to deter unauthorised entry into women-only compartments,” said the official. These measures align with the Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to create a safer travel environment for women and will continue in the coming months to address this pressing issue.

Railway authorities are encouraging passengers to respect these spaces and follow travel rules to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for all travellers.
