The press release mentioned that Northern Railways has also achieved the feat of becoming the first Zonal Railway to exceed Rs 100 crore milestone in sales of scrap this year. It has managed to make this record by putting on sale 528 slots and by conducting 71 auctions.
What comes under Railway scrap sale
The Northern Railway has taken up the initiative of discarding unused structures, for instance, cabins, water tanks, quarters, rail pieces, tie bars, and sleepers. The reason behind this step taken is to achieve zero scrap status. The idea of calling out for auction not only brings revenue for the Indian Railways but also helps in emptying the spaces and avoiding any kind of misuse or mishap. Some of the structures can also pose a danger to the employees as well as the passengers, so selling out the scraps can also help in cleaning out the premises.
The whole process of disposing of the scraps is conducted under the jurisdiction of the highest authority of the Indian Railways. The report also added that a large amount of scrap pre-stressed concrete (PSC) sleepers collected by the railways are also taken care of by following the proper disposal method.
