Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday (July 31)  highlighted that India is advancing in the development of bullet trains using indigenous technology.

While speaking in the Lok Sabha today, Vaishnaw detailed that the country’s first bullet train project, currently under construction between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, is a technologically complex endeavor supported by Japanese collaboration.

The project covers a total distance of 508 km between the two western cities, with work progressing on a 320 km stretch.

Work on bullet train project picks pace

Although construction in the Maharashtra section had previously slowed, it has accelerated since the BJP-Shiv Sena government took office in 2022, with all necessary state permissions now secured.

“Now, work is going on very speedily,” he said.

India to soon have first undersea rail tunnel

Vaishnaw also highlighted that the construction of India’s first undersea rail tunnel, spanning 21 km, is underway. While initial bullet train technology was imported, India has since developed many of its own technologies.

“We are working on developing bullet trains fully with indigenous technology and become ‘atmanirbhar’ (self reliant),” he said.
