About Kalka-Shimla Railway

The Kalka-Shimla Heritage Railway stands as a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of its creators, offering a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow-gauge railway in North India, running through mostly mountainous terrain from Kalka to Shimla. Known for its dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages, the railway was constructed under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the rest of the Indian rail system.

On 8 July 2008, UNESCO designated the Kalka–Shimla Railway as a World Heritage Site, as part of the mountain railways of India.

Kalka-Shimla railway, with its winding tracks through the serene Himalayas, continues to enchant travelers and history enthusiasts alike. The recent aerial capture shared by the Ministry of Railways vividly illustrates the railway’s charm, highlighting a toy train gracefully navigating the mountainous terrain.
