Indian Railways has launched a new initiative of converting scrapped train coaches into rail coach restaurants, which offer a unique dining experience to the customers. The first rail coach restaurant was opened at Charbagh railway station by Northern Railway. Later, North Eastern Railway also opened one at Gomtinagar railway station.

These restaurants are designed with modern interiors, air conditioning, and spacious seating arrangements.

They serve a variety of cuisines, including vegetarian, Chinese, and regional dishes. They also have takeaway counters for quick service. The restaurants operate 24×7 and generate revenue for the railways.

Rail coach restaurants in Uttar Pradesh and Pune

The restaurant at Gomtinagar has a five-year contract with the railway and can accommodate 70 customers. It is located in an open area near the entrance of the station and has a peaceful ambience. It has separate washrooms for men and women and seat arrangements for family and friends.

The second rail coach restaurant was inaugurated at Pune rail division by Haldirams. The restaurant can seat 40 customers and provides a fine-dining experience. It is managed by Indu Dubey and Brijeshkumar Singh, who have been in the catering business for years.

Apart from these, Indian Railway has also opened rail coach restaurants in Varanasi, Agra and Izzatnagar. They have also installed scrapped coaches at Gorakhpur and Sidhauli to convert them into restaurants. These restaurants are part of the non-fare revenue opportunity for the railways and aim to cater to the needs of passengers and the public.
