On the occasion of another year ending, Indian Railways shares its transformation and progress towards sustainable development, Digitisation and enhanced services. According to a post by Indian Railways on X (formerly Twitter), Indian Railways has produced more than 5,250 electric locomotives over nine years, which is a major step towards sustainability and Railways manifest to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030.
Electrification of Railways in India
This has come in the line when India has commendably electrified 90 per cent of the broad gauge network by March 2023. India registered electrification of 58,812 Route Kilometers (RKMs) out of the total network of 65,300 km network.
Free WiFi on Indian Railways
Taking strides towards digitisation, Indian railways have equipped more than 6,000 railway stations with free WiFi services.
Vista Dome Coaches
Since the introduction of the Vista Dome coach on the Visakhapatnam-Araku route in 2017, India has now more than 100 Vista Dome coaches across the country on different scenic routes. Vista dome coaches are all-weather glass-ceiling AC coaches that are used preferably on scenic routes.
New Investment
According to the latest media report, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the government plans to invest Rs 1 lakh crore in the coming times to replace the ageing rolling stock for which India would have to replace 7.000-8,000 new train sets.
