In view of the rising temperatures and scorching heatwave conditions across the country, the Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha has advised all railway zones to take necessary precautions to ensure safe train operations. Sinha, in a written communication dated May 30, 2024, addressed to all General Managers (GMs) of Railway Zones and emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards of asset maintenance and allowing no laxity at any level.

“The country is undergoing an usually hot summer and extreme weather conditions. In order to ensure that all due precautions are being taken to keep train operations safe, during this period specially, it is necessary that maintenance of all assets if of the highest standard and no laxity is allowed at any level,” the statement read.

Mandatory inspections

The chairperson also instructed General Managers of all zones to ensure that all Divisional Railway Managers conduct thorough inspections of all sections, including yards, within their divisions over the next month. 

Furthermore, she advised that principal heads of departments and heads of departments carry out detailed inspections covering all important aspects of their respective areas.

Additionally, GMs have been asked to ensure that all safety category staff are contacted and counseled, and any defects or deficiencies identified during the inspections are promptly addressed. 

All GMs are required to send a compliance report to the Principal Executive Director (PED), Safety, detailing the actions taken.
