In a significant move towards modernising India’s railway infrastructure, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inspected the Integrated Track Monitoring System (ITMS) at the New Delhi Railway Station. This advanced technology aims to transform track maintenance and safety by leveraging cutting-edge solutions for comprehensive diagnostics and monitoring.
What is an Integrated Track Monitoring System?
The ITMS is a high-tech system capable of monitoring critical track parameters at speeds ranging from 20 to 200 km/h. Its advanced features include contactless laser sensors, high-speed cameras, accelerometers, and GPS systems. These technologies ensure precise, real-time data collection, making ITMS a cornerstone in modern railway safety.
Additionally, the system is integrated with the Railways’ Track Management System (TMS), providing instant reports on track conditions via SMS and email. This integration enables swift action on critical defects, ensuring uninterrupted train operations and enhanced safety.
Investment to Modernise Railways
The Indian Railways plans to invest nearly Rs 180 crore to deploy ITMS vehicles across all 17 railway zones. Currently, there are seven ITMS vehicles in operation, with 10 more expected to be introduced. Each unit costs approximately Rs 18 crore, signifying a major financial commitment to infrastructure modernisation.
“These high-end machines help identify railway track issues such as missing clips and gaps between tracks, ensuring better safety across the railway network,” Vaishnaw stated during his inspection.
Features and Capabilities
The ITMS stands out with its innovative features:
- Contactless Monitoring Technology: Utilising laser sensors and line-scan cameras for high precision.
- Edge Servers: Installed on the vehicle for real-time data processing.
- Real-Time Alerts: Providing immediate updates on critical defects via SMS and email.
- Infringement Detection: Identifying obstructions and defects in visual track components.
This technology marks a first for Indian Railways, introducing a higher standard for safety and operational efficiency.
Collaboration with ADJ Engineering
The deployment and maintenance of ITMS are spearheaded by ADJ Engineering, a leader in railway diagnostic technologies. Under the leadership of Manish Pandey, the company has developed several advanced systems, including the Rail Inspection System and Ultrasonic Rail Testing System.
“Delivering tailored solutions to meet India’s unique needs has always been our priority,” said Pandey. The collaboration underscores the government’s Make in India initiative, promoting indigenous expertise and innovation.
Benefits for Track Maintenance Personnel
The ITMS significantly eases the workload of trackmen, providing them with real-time, accurate data for efficient maintenance. Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railways, highlighted that the system improves working conditions and enhances safety for personnel tasked with maintaining tracks.
Railway Modernization
Vaishnaw emphasised that ITMS deployment aligns with Indian Railways’ modernisation goals. “These are important steps towards transforming track maintenance and ensuring passenger safety,” he remarked.
The inspection also showcased the Road-Cum-Rail Inspection Vehicle (RCRIV), an innovative tool for continuous track recording. Together, these advancements aim to set new benchmarks in railway safety and efficiency.
