In preparation for the Maha Kumbh Mela, Indian Railways is implementing an extensive strategy to manage the unprecedented movement of an estimated 40 crore pilgrims. This ambitious plan involves the operation of 13,000 trains and significant infrastructure upgrades to ensure the seamless and efficient transportation of devotees across the country.

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, revealed that comprehensive upgrades are being undertaken at railway stations near key Kumbh Mela venues to provide enhanced passenger amenities. These improvements include better waiting areas, additional platforms, advanced lighting, upgraded sanitation facilities and an overall boost to station infrastructure.

To improve accessibility and convenience, Indian Railways is expanding its ticketing services. Digital ticketing platforms are being strengthened to handle increased demand, and additional ticket counters will be set up within the Mela grounds to minimize congestion and ensure timely access to travel services.

Safety is a top priority, and to that end, the Railway Police Force and Government Railway Police will be deployed extensively to protect passengers and maintain order during the event. Emergency response systems and medical assistance points will also be established at strategic locations to address unforeseen challenges.

Beyond the Kumbh Mela preparations, Indian Railways is also making strides in enhancing regional connectivity. A landmark announcement introduced a new rail division in Jammu, covering an initial stretch of 721 kilometers that includes the Jammu–Srinagar–Budgam section. This new division, previously part of the Ferozepur division, marks a significant leap in bolstering the railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

The creation of the Jammu rail division is part of Indian Railways’ broader modernization efforts aimed at improving connectivity, fostering economic growth, and ensuring better service delivery in the region. These initiatives collectively underline Indian Railways’ commitment to addressing both the immediate demands of the Maha Kumbh Mela and the long-term goal of creating a robust and inclusive transportation network across India.
