Indian Railways has successfully conducted a trial run of the eagerly awaited train service on the Katra-Banihal section, which includes the iconic Chenab Bridge, as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This trial run is a significant milestone towards the operationalisation of this key rail corridor, aimed at boosting connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth in the region.

Chief Administrative Officer Sandeep Gupta provided insights into the progress, stating, “This is not the first trial. On January 7 and 8, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will conduct a safety inspection. During this inspection, a trial will also be conducted from Banihal to Katra at a train speed of 110 km/h. Today, a trial was conducted from Banihal to Katra and back using a WAP-7 electric locomotive. Trials are ongoing, and the CRS will deliver a report on January 8. The tracks have been joined, and all work is complete.”

The trial focused on assessing various parameters, including track stability, signaling systems, safety infrastructure, and overall operational readiness. The train navigated the challenging Katra-Banihal stretch with precision, covering tunnels, viaducts, and high-altitude terrains.

This section is a crucial link in the USBRL project, bridging the Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley. It is renowned for its engineering marvels, including the Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway bridge—along with advanced tunnels and state-of-the-art safety features.

With this successful trial, Indian Railways has taken a major step toward providing seamless train connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. This initiative will facilitate easier movement of passengers and goods while contributing to the region’s integration and development.

The final CRS inspection is scheduled for January 7-8, 2025, after which regular train services are expected to commence.
