Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday laid the foundation for revamping the Gurgaon railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

The design of the building will showcase the local culture, heritage, and architecture. The redeveloped station will also enhance modern facilities for passengers by ensuring universal access to the railway station.

Addressing a program, Union Minister of State and Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh said in Haryana, work is underway on railway projects worth Rs 20,000 crore, with the state receiving Rs 2,750 crore for development of the railway infrastructure in the interim budget.

Decoding Gurgaon redevelopment railway station project

With a project cost estimated at Rs 300 crore, the proposed Gurgaon railway station will be based on a G+8 design. It includes the construction of a new main station building along with ground plus eight floors and a roof plaza or air concourse.

Notably, the roof plaza will connect from both sides of the track, providing access from both primary and secondary sides. Further, the revamped station’s external development will include access and exit from the road, pick and drop points, canopies, and green spaces.

“Three floors in the new eight-storey building will be utilised for railway purposes, one floor will be dedicated for various facilities to the passengers, and the remaining four floors be kept for commercial uses including different amenities such as cafes, etc,” Rao Inderjit Singh informed.

Plans are also on for dedicated multi-level car parking (basement plus stilt plus 4) on the arrival plaza along with state-of-the-art security systems. The development works are also underway in the station vicinity such as the removal of the cement shed at Rajendra Park.

Singh said that significant development in the railway infrastructure has taken place over the past decade, under PM Modi’s leadership, unlike with previous governments, where railway budgets were predominantly allocated to the rail minister’s region or states, leaving places like Haryana neglected.

Amrit Bharat Station scheme

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi launched over 2,000 rail infrastructure projects worth about Rs 41,000 crore in the country. He also announced the redevelopment of 554 railway stations under the Indian Railways Amrit Bharat Station scheme. These stations, spread across 27 States and Union Territories, will be redeveloped at a cost of over Rs. 19,000 crores.

The marquee scheme aims to develop stations continuously with a long-term approach. It involves the preparation of master plans and their implementation in phases to improve the amenities at the stations like improvement of station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lift/escalators as necessary, cleanliness, free Wi-Fi, kiosks for local products through schemes like ‘One Station One Product’ among others.
