Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced his ministry’s initiatives during the Budget Session in Lok Sabha on Thursday. He outlined the ministry’s ambitious plans for upgrading railway infrastructure and technology.
“All old ICF coaches, which are based on 1950s technology, need to be replaced. We are undertaking the design of a completely new coach, keeping in mind today’s technology. This new coach will be a testament to Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India),” the Railway Minister said.
Expanding rail services for varied travel needs
For long-distance travel exceeding 700 to 1,000 kilometres, the Vande Sleeper has been designed. “The first train has been manufactured, and its testing is currently underway,” he added.
To cater to large cities with shorter travel distances, the Vande Metro has been designed. “This regional train will be launched very soon,” Vaishnaw announced.
Expressing gratitude towards railway employees, Vaishnaw said, “I would like to thank the 1.2 million railway employees, the railway family of 1.2 million, who tirelessly work day and night, through cold and heat, sun and rain, to operate over 20,000 trains daily and serve the nation.”
Defending ministry amidst criticism
Furthermore, he strongly defended his ministry, addressing opposition criticisms regarding recent train derailments. As the opposition benches jeered at him, he responded, “Hum reel banane wale log nahi, mehnat karne wale log hain,” emphasizing the dedication of his team over mere showmanship.
Regarding loco pilot regulations, he stated, “The average working and rest times for loco pilots were established by a rule in 2005. Amendments in 2016 introduced additional facilities.”
He highlighted the significant improvements made for loco pilots, including air-conditioning in all 558 running rooms and over 7,000 loco cabs, contrasting these with the previous administration’s perceived shortcomings.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to enhancing railway infrastructure, he announced plans to produce 2,500 general coaches soon, with a total goal of 10,000 coaches.
