Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the much-awaited priority section of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor at Uttar Pradesh’s Sahibabad RapidX station today. He also flagged off ‘Namo Bharat” the country’s first RapidX train connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot, marking the launch of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the country. The government is developing the RRTS project to transform regional connectivity through construction of new world class transport infrastructure.

What is the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS)?

The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is a new rail-based, semi-high-speed, high-frequency commuter transit system. The train has a design speed of 180 Kmph. However, the train will operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph. It will provide high-speed trains for intercity commuting every 15 minutes, which can go up to a frequency of every 5 minutes as per requirement.

Cost of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor:-

The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is being developed at a cost of more than Rs 30,000 crore. It will connect Delhi to Meerut in less than an hour of travel time going through the urban centres of Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar.

About Priority Section of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor:-

The 17 km long priority section stretches from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot. The priority section will have five stations. These are – Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has received  the approval of the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS)  in June this year for the operation of RAPIDX service on this stretch.

Significance of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor:-

With the beginning of regional rail service on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor’s priority section, the passenger will enjoy faster travel options between the two destinations. This will provide a modern, sustainable, convenient, fast, safe and comfortable means of travel. Upon the full completion of the corridor, the RRTS is set to slash travel times between Delhi and Meerut by 40 per cent.
