Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be inaugurating the redeveloped Chandigarh railway station in May, The Indian Express reported. At present, the Chandigarh railway station witness about 36,000 passengers per day with 82 trains on average passing including 17 pairs originating/terminating per day.

The redevelopment work is going on in full swing, the officials at the railway station revealed, adding that the complete project is expected to be opened for the public in May next year.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, Minister of State (MoS) for Railways and Food Processing Industries said that one foot over bridge (FOB), two new buildings on both sides of the station and parking will be ready for use by February 2025. The redeveloped railway station, with a total cost of Rs 462 crore, will feature separate zones for arriving and departing passengers.

Chandigarh station: Redevelopment plan

As per the redevelopment plan, the station will feature a G+3 station building (60m x 42m) on both the Chandigarh and Panchkula sides, equipped with a total of 30 lifts. Additionally, there will be 10 escalators and two foot overbridges (FOBs), each spanning 12 meters.

G+3 refers to a structure with a ground floor (G) and three additional floors above it (+3).

To facilitate convenient parking for the public, a 25,000-square-metre parking area is being developed for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, officials said. They also noted that two 20-bed dormitories and 10 air-conditioned retiring rooms, equipped with TVs, heaters, and other amenities, will be available for passengers.

A designated area for a food plaza, along with a 72m x 80m air concourse and an air-conditioned restaurant, will also be provided. However, officials noted that the completion of the concourse will take additional time.
