A student’s recent F1 visa experience in Mumbai has sparked discussion on social media after they shared how their visa was rejected within minutes.
What happened during the interview?
According to the post, the visa officer at the US consulate asked just one question: “Why do you want to go to the US?” The student, who had applied to pursue a Master’s in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, responded accordingly. However, the officer immediately said, “Sorry, your visa is not approved.” The student is confused over what to do next and the reasons behind the rejection.
‘It should be because of the university’
Netizens poured in their comments on the post. A user said, ” It’s a trash university, with a QS Ranking>1000 and Acceptance Rate~ 80%. People have historically gained admits from trash unis to game the visa system and work illegally, seek asylum and residency. Also, it also depends on how diligently you filled your DS-160.”
Another added, ” The question was why the US and not which university. The answer should be on the lines of reasons why you chose the US and that university. Your answer should convince the VO that you’re not going to the US for the sake of going to the US but for education with rational reasoning.”
“Not really convincing if your job is to provide a reason why of all the places in the world you chose this one. But the quickness probably means they had already rejected you. Did you have the $30k plus money for living expenses ready to go?,” noted a netizen.
“Yes – it’s because you applied to a university that has been red flagged by the consulate. There are many such universities which have connections with consultancy services and you get admits because they have an affiliation with the consultancy you applied from,” added a user.
