Good news for teachers looking for work in New Zealand. From May 1, 2024, secondary school teachers are now on the Straight to Residence pathway on the Green List of in-demand roles. In April, the Government of New Zealand announced that secondary school teachers will move to the Straight to Residence pathway on the Green List of in-demand roles.

Eligible overseas secondary school teachers can now apply for residence from outside New Zealand when they have an offer of employment with an accredited employer, and without needing to work for 2 years in New Zealand first.

In New Zealand, there is a high need for foreign secondary school teachers. To cope with the labor shortfall, foreign secondary school teachers relocating to New Zealand will have expedited residency requirements. The government of New Zealand has declared that starting in May 2024, secondary school teachers will be placed on the Green List of in-demand jobs and placed on the Straight to Residence track.

The move aims to simplify the residency application process for eligible overseas secondary school teachers, eliminating the need for work experience in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s education system faces shortages of secondary teachers in Science, Technology, and Mathematics, with Straight to Residence pathway expected to fill the short to medium term.

The Straight to Residence pathway visa is available for those working or with a job offer from an accredited employer, on Tier 1 of the Green List in-demand. Straight to Residence Visa allows living, working, and studying in New Zealand, including partner and dependent children under 24; older children must be single, financially supported by the applicant.
