Securing Permanent Residency in Iceland has become increasingly easier for Indians in recent months — with simplified eligibility criteria and lower fees. The Nordic nation consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the world and offers a very high standard of living. It has also remained the safest country in the world for 17 consecutive years.

Indian citizens who have lived in Iceland for at least four consecutive years (with some exceptions) and hold a valid residence permit can apply to become a permanent resident. PR operates somewhat differently from typical visas and allows people to live indefinitely in the other country without needed to renew short-term permits. Iceland is also a member of the Schengen Area — therefore allowing PR holders to travel across 29 European countries without border checks.

Are you eligible?

Indians who have lived in Iceland continuously for at least four years are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency. They cannot live outside Iceland for more than 90 days per year during the residence period. Some exceptions may be possible — such as spouses of Icelandic citizens who may qualify after three years. They must hold a valid residence permit and have sufficient financial means to support themselves. The minimum required income is approximately Rs 1.8 lakh per month for individuals and around Rs 2.9 lakh per month for married couples.

The applicant also has to complete an Icelandic language course of at least 150 lessons or pass an Icelandic language proficiency test. It is imperative that they have no criminal record and maintain regularly renewed permits.

PR under Rs 12,000?

Eligible candidates can apply online via the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration website using an electronic certificate. They will have to pay a Rs 11,500 fee while submitting the form. a valid residence permit must be maintained while they wait for a decision.
