Canada citizenship fees have been increased. On March 31, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it had increased the right of citizenship fee for adult applicants by 20% from $100 to $119.75.

There are two citizenship fees to be paid by individuals – The processing fee and the right of citizenship fee. Only the right of citizenship fee has been hiked, while processing fees remain the same at $530.

Adults aged 18 and above applying for citizenship now have to pay $649.75 in total fees, including the processing fee and updated citizenship fee. Citizenship application fees for minors under 18 are $100, while stateless adults born to Canadian parents pay a right of citizenship fee of $119.75. The fees are the same whether to apply online or on paper.

To become a Canadian citizen, most applicants must be permanent residents, have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days), have filed their taxes, pass a citizenship test, prove their language skills in English or French, and take the oath of citizenship.

The citizenship process includes the processing of the complete application, the citizenship test, the interview, and the ceremony.

After the citizenship ceremony, you can apply for a passport, vote in an election, and get free admission to Canada’s natural parks and cultural centres.

The IRCC will flag your application if you paid the old fee before or after March 31, 2025, and request the $19.75 difference. Mailing an application can delay, but if completed before March 31, 2025, and the old fee is paid, the application will not be rejected. However, you’ll be asked to pay the difference.
