Indore is set to witness the launch of metro rail services soon, as the submission of essential documents to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is in its final phase, according to officials from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL). The metro services are expected to begin either later this month or in February, pending a green signal from the CMRS.

“The work of submitting necessary documents to the CMRS from the MPMRCL is in the final stage. After the submission, the CMRS will take stock of the security arrangements by fixing the date of inspection of the depot and stations of the metro rail,” the official of the corporation said, PTI reported.

Priority corridor to kickstart services

The initial phase of operations will focus on a 5.90 km priority corridor, stretching from Gandhi Nagar station to station number three on the Super Corridor. This route saw its first trial run in September last year.

However, officials anticipate that the route might face a lack of passenger demand initially due to a dispersed population in the area. “Once the metro rail starts and its route stretches, there won’t be a shortage of passengers,” the MPMRCL official said.

Scalability and capacity

Stations along the route have been designed to accommodate trains with up to six coaches. For now, the metro will operate three-coach trains, with the capacity to add three more coaches based on passenger demand. Each metro car can carry 300 passengers, including 50 seated.

Project overview

The foundation stone for the first phase of the Indore Metro Rail Project was laid on September 14, 2019. The Rs 7,500.80 crore project aims to develop a 31.50 km ring-shaped metro corridor across the city.

With the metro’s launch imminent, Indore is poised to enhance its urban mobility and connect key areas, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure development.
