The Pune Metro rail service is set to expand further, with the 23-km route from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar expected to be operational by September 2025, offering much-needed relief to commuters in the city. The route, initially scheduled to open by March 2025, faced delays due to election-related restrictions and VIP movement, reported Indian Express.

Work Progressing Despite Delays

A Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) official confirmed that while work on the Metro rail route is progressing at full speed, a deadline extension has been sought, and the launch is now slated for the end of September, according to Indian Express. The route will provide a direct and smoother connection to the Hinjewadi Infotech Park, one of Pune’s largest employment hubs.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, has urged authorities to expedite the work, while Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis is also set to review the project’s progress. Additionally, the PMRDA is constructing a flyover along Ganeshkhind Road to complement the Metro route, enhancing connectivity further.

The ongoing project is part of Pune Metro’s larger expansion efforts. Phase 1, which included routes from Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad to Swargate, covering 33 km, is already fully operational with two stretches having been opened in 2024. The metro network is also expanding, with work underway on an extension from PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj, a 9 km stretch set to be completed in 2025.

In addition, discussions are ongoing to extend Metro routes from Ramwadi to Wagholi, Chandni Chowk to Vanaz, and from Khadakwasla to Kharadi, with approval expected soon. Phase 2, which covers 113.23 km, is also progressing. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already given the green light for the project, with state approval granted and the plan awaiting approval from the Union Government.
