Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted the Northeast region’s remarkable progress since 2014. Speaking on Friday, the minister emphasised unprecedented advancements in infrastructure, transportation, education, and organic farming, underlining the region’s transformation into a developmental hub.

Budgetary Surge: A 300% Increase

The Northeast has witnessed a dramatic rise in budget allocation, with the outlay increasing by over 300 per cent—from Rs 36,108 crore in 2014 to Rs 94,680 crore in FY 2023-24. This financial boost underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the developmental gap in this region.

National Highways Expansion: A 28% Growth

The region’s road infrastructure has seen significant progress:

  • The number of National Highways (NHs) has risen from 80 in 2014 to 103 in 2023.
  • Ongoing road projects span more than 4,016 km, ensuring improved connectivity and economic opportunities.

Railways: Electrification and Connectivity

The Northeast’s railway network has undergone a remarkable transformation:

  • Over 193 km of rail lines have been commissioned annually.
  • The region achieved 100 per cent electrification of broad-gauge lines, promoting sustainability and efficiency.
  • The railway budget for the Northeast has increased by 370 per cent.

Aviation Growth: More Airports, More Flights

The aviation sector in the region has soared, with:

  • 17 operational airports now serving the Northeast, a substantial increase within a decade.
  • A 113 per cent rise in weekly flights, offering greater connectivity and bolstering tourism and trade.

Education and Organic Farming

Educational and agricultural initiatives have also been key drivers of growth:

  • The number of universities in the Northeast has increased by 39 per cent.
  • Over 1.55 lakh hectares of land have been utilized for organic farming, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

4G Connectivity and Digital Inclusion

Digital infrastructure has seen rapid advancement, with 4G services reaching almost every part of the Northeast. This development ensures digital inclusion and connectivity for the region’s remote areas.

Inland Waterways

Sonowal highlighted the Northeast’s progress in rejuvenating inland waterways as an alternative mode of transportation:

  • The region’s rich riverine networks have been revitalised to enable economical and eco-friendly transport.
  • This effort aligns with PM Modi’s vision of sustainable transportation development.

The Northeast has transformed into a hub of economic and social progress, driven by targeted initiatives and robust budgetary support. From improved connectivity and infrastructure to advancements in education and organic farming, the region now stands as a testament to India’s inclusive development model.
