Mumbai is set to welcome its first bird park within two years. Covering a sprawling 17,150 square meters, the park will be located in Nahur, in the city’s eastern suburbs, The Indian Express reported.
The park will be built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as an extension of the Byculla Zoo. The aviary will be home to both exotic and native bird species, while also offering Mumbaikars a lush green space featuring a jogging track, basketball and volleyball courts, and a dedicated sports arena.
Mumbai bird park: Features
The aviary will feature multiple themed sections, including the Africa Zone, Australia Zone, and USA Zone, each dedicated to housing bird species native to those regions. Additionally, an interpretation center will be available for bird watchers and ornithologists to enhance their experience.
Officials from the BMC zoology department have stated that the aviary will accommodate up to 22 bird species, including the black swan, toco toucan, and white peafowl, among others.
Cost and timeline
The construction and design of the aviary are estimated to cost Rs 100 crore. Civic officials have indicated that the park is expected to be completed by 2027.
The BMC’s proposal to acquire additional bird species received approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) last year. Another proposal, detailing the park’s layout, has been submitted and is expected to receive approval by late December or early January.
