The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) on Saturday unveiled the ‘Meerut Metro’ at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad, according to officials.
The metro features three-car train sets with ergonomically designed 2×2 transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements, offering cushioned seats for enhanced comfort. Each train can accommodate over 700 passengers, with seating available for 173 people, as per the officials.
In order to ensure safety, platform screen doors will be installed at all the stations synchronised with the operations of the metro. The doors will also help with crowd management. Additionally, officials mentioned that selective door opening through push buttons will help reduce energy consumption.
Revolutionising Meerut Metro
The Managing Director of the NCRTC, Shalabh Goel, said that the metro will revolutionsise city’s transportation, enhancing connectivity, productivity, and overall quality of life.
“By providing a modern, reliable, and fast transit system, it will reduce travel time, alleviate traffic congestion, and foster economic growth,” Goel said, adding that the NCRTC has thoroughly studied commuter needs and tailored the features of this modern transit system to provide maximum comfort and ensure efficient journeys for passengers.
As per the Make in India guidelines, 100 per cent of the train sets for the Meerut Metro are being manufactured domestically in Savli, Gujarat. So far, five of these world-class trainsets have been delivered to the NCRTC, officials said.
Meerut Metro trains
The Meerut Metro trains are designed to reach speeds of 135 km/h, with a maximum operational speed of 120 km/h. These train sets feature a sleek, lightweight design made from stainless steel, making them energy-efficient. They are also equipped with a regenerative braking system and are compatible with both automatic train protection (ATP) and automatic train operations (ATO), according to officials.
Safety features such as a passenger emergency communication system, fire extinguishers, alarms, and talk-back systems have been integrated into the metro trains. Additionally, each coach will have reserved seating for women and senior citizens.
Both the stations and trains are universally accessible, with designated spaces for medical stretchers or wheelchairs during emergencies. The metro stations are also equipped with spacious lifts designed to accommodate stretchers and wheelchairs, they added.
The Meerut Metro will share the same RRTS infrastructure between Meerut South and Modipuram.
At four of these stations – Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram – commuters can seamlessly switch between the Meerut Metro and Namo Bharat train services. This integrated approach has resulted in substantial savings on infrastructure costs, including overhead electrification (OHE), viaduct, track, and signaling systems, according to officials.
The Meerut Metro corridor covers 23 km and includes 13 stations, with 18 km of elevated tracks and 5 km underground. Of the 13 stations, nine are elevated, three are underground, and one (depot station) is at ground level. The modern trainsets will complete the 23 km journey in just 30 minutes, officials said.
