Kolkata Metro Railway on Saturday (April 20) announced that the construction of the underground Mominpur-Esplanade stretch of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor (Purple Line) has commenced.
The Joka-Esplanade corridor, spanning 15.08 km in south Kolkata, saw the inauguration of the 6.5 km stretch from Joka to Taratala on December 30, 2022, which was extended to Majerhat on March 6, 2024.
Tunnelling begins from Khidderpore to Victoria station
Tunnelling will start from Khidderpore and extend to Victoria (Memorial) station, with Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations commencing from the premises of St. Thomas School.
Moreover, to construct the Park Street station, three club tents in the Maidan area – Calcutta Police Club, Calcutta Kennel Club, and Rajasthan Club – will need to be temporarily relocated outside the construction zone, as per an official.
For the construction of the Esplanade Metro station, Kolkata Mounted Police paddock will be temporarily relocated to Saheed Minar Maidan, and the Manohardas Tarag waterbody will be dewatered to facilitate the construction of tunnels beneath it.
