Starting January 1, 2025, Kolkata Metro will impose a Rs 10 surcharge on tickets for special night services on the New Garia-Dum Dum stretch of the Blue Line. The trial initiative aims to address the poor occupancy of these late-night trains, which operate after regular service hours.

A Metro spokesperson confirmed that the surcharge will apply to all special night services along the Kavi Subhash-Dum Dum route. The trains will depart at 10:40 p.m. on weekdays. The measure, previously announced on December 3 but postponed following public criticism on social media, will now be implemented.

“The Rs 10 surcharge is necessary to offset low ridership during these services. It will apply uniformly, regardless of the distance traveled,” the spokesperson explained, adding that the decision will be reviewed based on its impact.

The experimental surcharge reflects the Metro Railway’s efforts to maintain operational viability while ensuring services for late-night commuters. However, it has sparked debate, with some commuters questioning the move amid rising transportation costs.

This trial phase will provide crucial data for assessing the sustainability of night services, balancing commuter needs with the Metro’s financial stability.
