Kolkata Metro will soon allow its commuters to buy tickets or recharge their metro smart cards via UPI on the North-South Line, an official has said.
Currently, this facility of buying tickets via UPI is available on the Sector V-Sealdah section of the East-West Line. The same will be made available on the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the corridor, the official added.
“We will soon introduce the same facility at all metro stations of the North-South and the East-West Lines,” he said.
In the coming future, the Orange Line’s New Garia-Ruby section and Joka-Taratala section of the Purple Line will get the same facility.
UPI-based ticketing system in Kolkata Metro
The first Kolkata Metro station which saw UPI-based ticketing system getting introduced was the Sealdah station of the East-West Line. This service was launched on May 7.
To pay via UPI, commuters need to scan the QR code displayed on the dual display board at the ticket counters after the ticketing officer inputs the destination station, according to the official.
Surge in QR ticket usage
Earlier this month, it was reported that in a span of one and a half months over 13 lakh commuters used QR-coded tickets on the Sector Five-Sealdah and Esplanade-Howrah Maidan stretches.
Between April 1 and May 13, a total of 13, 19,173 paper-based QR tickets were sold at various ticket counters for the Sector Five-Sealdah (Green Line 1) and Esplanade-Howrah Maidan (Green Line 2) routes, according to an official statement.
